  1. I bought this erector set for my 10-year-old son for Christmas. He loved it, but would have been just as happy with a nice RC car that was already assembled. He’s a typical 4th grader, but was unable to “erect” this car without massive amounts of help. He made it through step one, then I spent 3-4 hours putting the rest together because the directions were very complicated (I’m your typical 35-year-old-mom), yet I couldn’t finish it. My husband, an engineer, was finally able to attach the body to the frame, but he had to modify some of the parts and it took him about 2 hours to finish it. I think that the suggested age range on this toy is off by a long shot!

The other, not-so-fun surprise, which was totally my oversight, is that it requires 6 AA batteries in the car and an 9V battery for the controller. Luckily I robbed the smoke alarm and had some extra AAs on hand. However, this car QUICKLY drains the batteries so I switched to rechargeable–which I have had to charge twice this afternoon with (what I would consider to be) normal usage. If you don’t buy rechargeable batteries for it, buy some stock in Energizer because you are going to be spending a lot of money on batteries!

Overall, it’s a fun toy. However, if I could do it over again, I would just buy a nice RC car with a rechargeable battery pack and save myself a whole lot of Christmas Day headache!
