  1. My son is a few month away from being nine. He purchased this with his own money so it was a big deal with lots of Lego looking. He had fun building it but said that during the building process, pressing down on the Legos often led to part of the assembly snapping off, causing many re-builds. In the words of the Wicked Witch of the West “These things have to be handled delicately.” Once finished, my son really likes to play and pretend with his Lego toys. They look very realistic and are just begging to be taken off display and actually put to use. The side doors on the helicopter break off almost every time he opens them, but he patiently reconstructs it again and again. The little raft is solid. The winch works great. Overall it was a good buy…it wasn’t my money. Like other Lego sets we own, and we own many, they are much more fun to build then they are to use as imaginative toys once built.

  2. The lego coast guard helicopter is my favorite lego set I own. It has all this cool stuff. There is a self wind string and a hook. You just hold a button and the string and the hook on it winds up. It has four mini figures, one shark and one coast guard boat. And it was much bigger than I thought it would be. It has two seats and one stretcher. Overall it has good money value. The play value is good too.

  4. Great set. Santa found it on sale at for about half this price. The lucky 8 year old boy who received it put it together in a little over two hours by himself on Christmas day. He said the directions were a little confusing and he had to take a few pieces off and relocate them during construction. However he was thrilled with the final result and was happy to see the winch action on the chopper to pull in the guys from the life raft below. This is a great way for kids to learn how objects are assembled and develops great spatial-relationships for kids of all ages. Nice to have a life raft to further the play action/building time. By constructing this toy, he also had more questions about the Coast Guard, which gave us teachable moments when we went to see relatives who live by Lake Erie.

  5. This is the first set I purchased from the new Lego City Coast Guard series. I have constructed the smaller Lego helicopters before, and I was struck by the size of this set – it was larger than I expected. As noted in a previous review, it is wide enough for two mini-figures to sit side by side.

The helicopter has two doors on either side of the cargo bay, in which you will find a working winch. It works by pulling out the string/thread tied to it, then simply pressing a button on the passenger side of the exterior cockpit to reel the winch back in. My 3-year-old was especially impressed by this feature – he repeated the process some twenty times before I told him that it was time to stop.

The set includes a life raft and four mini-figures – the flippers included fit nicely on a mini-figure and are a nice touch. The helicopter is also solidly built – it has not fallen apart as of yet. Overall, my expectations were not very high for this set but it happened to surprise me.
